An Italian study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine provides further confirmation on the efficacy of lactoferrin against Covid-19. (1)
Lactoferrin versus Covid-19, the new study
The researchers’ work rests on a survey based on actual clinical practice, conducted by general practitioners in Tuscany and Lazio on virus-positive patients in home isolation.
A total of 121 people aged 17 to 104 who were Covid-19 positive and in different conditions were included in the research:
– Asymptomatic, swab positive but symptomless,
– paucisymptomatic, with low fever (<38 °C) and/or cough and/or sore throat and/or headache and/or general malaise and/or myalgia,
– Moderate symptomatic, with fever >38 °C for at least three days and/or persistent cough and/or prolonged asthenia and/or widespread pain and/or dyspnea and/or gastrointestinal problems and/or arthralgias and/or decreased blood oxygen saturation.
The results
Timely administration of lactoferrin (in some cases in combination with different drugs) has been shown to be useful, particularly in the elderly, who produce less of it.
In the 82 treated patients, compared with the remaining 39, a significant reduction in swab negativization time was observed: 15 days instead of 24.
Moreover, none of the participants in the treated group was hospitalized, while in the control group it happened to one patient.
Science and politics
The usefulness of lactoferrin against Covid-19 for its antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic properties was demonstrated as early as 2020, at the height of the pandemic, in a study at the Policlinico Tor Vergata in Rome, as we reported.
Since then, several other studies have confirmed this evidence. Ignoring them remains health policies. In fact, the Italian National Health Service continues to ignore this and other forms of non-drug prevention and treatment. As we have seen with vitamin D, lactoferrin is also accessible only to those who can pay for it out of their own pockets.
