Research on the health benefits related to probiotic consumption sees Italy first in Europe in terms of the amount of studies published (671) and second in the world, after the United States (1,500).
A possible correlation between the consumption of probiotics and the manifestation of beneficial effects on the gastrointestinal system, with alleviation of symptoms of disorders, such as constipation and various forms of diarrhea, in both childhood and adulthood has been documented in the literature. Positive action of probiotics would also be exerted in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome and chronic inflammation of the intestines.
Further evidence seems to be emerging in modulating the immune response and related diseases, such as allergies and colds.
Studies submitted to EFSA have so far been deemed insufficient to give probiotics an indication for use. The only health claim allowed is “promotes the balance of intestinal flora,” approved by the Italian Ministry of Health guidelines, based on the traditional use of probiotics.
