Roncadin frozen pizza industry has installed 13 hives capable of accommodating 650 thousand bees. A valuable project, protecting these precious pollinators and all of us.
Roncadin protects bees
The Meduno (Pordenone)-based company created the new home for bees on land adjacent to the plant, employing beehives made from PEFG(Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) certified wood for forest protection and material traceability.
The project is conceived and implemented by a Roncadin employee, Renzo Casali, a production line worker and also an experienced beekeeper with his family business, Apicoltura Val Meduna, also in Meduno, which produces organic honey.
Honey, wax and air control
‘This project has numerous purposes. The most important is to make our contribution in protecting the bee population, whose decline is a worldwide problem. But this is only the starting point.
We will produce honey and wax, the analysis of which will give us useful insights into air quality in Meduno, and we are also thinking about how to make our apiary an educational resource for schools in the future,’ explains CEO Dario Roncadin.
An environmentally sustainable apiary
The apiary was set up following eco-sustainability criteria: the blocks and tiles were salvaged from the beekeeping company’s new laboratory renovation work, while the concrete and wooden poles were salvaged from an old disused family vineyard.
There are now about 50,000 bees in each hive, for a total of 650,000, which set up in late May and began foraging the great acacia bloom. In addition, melliferous trees have been planted in the Roncadin parking lot, and, again with the aim of supporting bees in their activities, flower beds with wild flowers liked by the insects will be set up near the apiary.
A project in the making
The project is open to further development. Roncadin is considering building an educational facility where, in safety and with beekeeper intervention, people will be able to see up close how hives are made and how a family of bees is organized, with the queen, drones and workers busily engaged in their essential work for the survival of numerous plant and animal species, including our own.
